Deaf spaces, musical spaces

The audience rippled with the signing hands of Deaf and hearing people, communicating together, or simply waving their hands in applause. Signmark called from the stage, “Rhythm isn’t something we hear, but also see and feel,” as he encouraged the audience to move their hands and bodies along with the music.

Two years ago, I took a trip to Washington, D.C. to see a performance by the Deaf rapper Signmark, who had traveled to the Kennedy Center from Finland to participate in a Nordic festival. The trip was all the more rich, because I got to bring my deaf son. And while we were in DC, we also got to experience some American Deaf history.

I blogged about it for the blog of the music and disability studies study group of the AMS/SMT.
